If you did an online search for “Experts get it wrong,” you’d find a list of times throughout history when “experts” drew wrong conclusions and made false predictions based on misinterpreting the facts or a lack of information.
In 1959 the U.S. Postmaster General declared, “Before man reaches the moon, mail will be delivered within hours . . . by guided missiles.” Then an essay entitled “The Futurists” (TIME Magazine, 1966) predicted that remote shopping would never reach popularity. And the editor of BYTE magazine warned the public that, “Y2K is a crisis without precedent in human history.”
The lesson here? Don’t believe everything “the experts” tell you.
A similar incident occurred in first century Israel. Jewish leaders were convinced the Messiah, the heir to David’s throne, would arrive as a powerful monarch, relieving them of Roman occupation. They anticipated their Messianic “package” arriving professionally wrapped, royal, flashy, impressive! Thus, when Jesus showed up as an unimpressive, tiny bundle wrapped in brown paper and twine, they missed it. They saw Him as a trouble maker, merely a carpenter’s son pretending greatness. Yet Scripture calls Him the King of kings and Lord of lords (I Timothy 6:15, Revelation 17:14 and 19:16).
It’s easy to process life solely with human reasoning, based on science, historical trends, or “expert” opinions. This limits what God can do in and through our lives. Yet, with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Do you believe it?
Jesus sure did! When pressed for tax money, Jesus told Peter he’d find the needed coin in the first fish he caught. Or when faced with a hungry crowd of thousands, Jesus borrowed a young boy’s lunch, blessed it, and multiplied the food to feed everyone to their satisfaction–with twelve baskets of leftovers! And He healed every kind of sickness and disease with a word, a touch, even mud! That is NOT scientific, it’s supernatural! Does your paradigm make room for that?
Consider this contemporary example. A young woman read online that the solution to her depression involved mood-altering drugs. But she prayed and God told her the joy-stealing culprits in her life included credit card debt, a jam-packed schedule, and wrong attitudes. He specifically revealed ungratefulness, insecurity, and worry! He led her to give away some prized possessions–clothing and accessories that had failed to eliminate her insecurity. This unexpectedly resulted in the joy she so earnestly desired–with no side effects!
Isaiah 55:8-9 says, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
What challenges, large or small, do you face today? Have you prayed about them? If so, what are you expecting? Don’t miss God’s answer by relying on the wrong counsel. Instead, consult the real expert, the Creator of heaven and earth. He will never steer you wrong.
