Merci Ma Peau

My skin was shocked when I thanked it today;
To most it might seem a strange thing to say.
But just imagine the mess I would be
Were I found without skin to cover me!
Keeps bad things out and holds everything in—
Thank you, humble and undemanding skin!

One time, when my skin was out of order,
I looked like a denizen of Mordor.
Afflicted with itching, covered in rash—
Icing all night when I wanted to crash!
Memories like that make one reflective,
Lending a much more grateful perspective.

It seems in life over so much we gloss
Until we’re without and we’ve suffered loss—
Then we perceive what we had all along;
Why should we wait until something goes wrong?
Be proactive, friend, find gratitude soon—
Say “thank you” for something this afternoon!
